Korean

[edit]

Etymology 1

[edit]

The slang definition is often connected to the fish sense (Etymology 2) by folk etymology, but this is incompatible with the Gyeongsang pitch accent. "Lie" was the traditional sense in the Seoul dialect, the standard form of Korean, while the "idle chatter" sense was traditionally the Gyeongsang dialect definition of the word; however, the latter has largely displaced the former even in Seoul.
