狐 (kitsune, “fox”) + 猿 (saru, “monkey”). Compare Chinese 狐猴 (húhóu, literally “fox monkey”), Korean 여우원숭이 (yeouwonsung'i, literally “fox monkey”) and Vietnamese vượn cáo (literally “fox ape”).
