Etymology[edit]
Attestable in ancient Chinese texts in its original verb form, "to study hard". The "mechanics" sense is wasei kango (和製漢語), orthographically borrowed from Japanese 力学 (rikigaku), [1] itself a calque of English mechanics, first attested in 《英軺日記》 by the Liu Xihong in 1876.
