From Proto-Southwestern Tai *daːŋᴬ² (“road; way”). Cognate with Thai ทาง (taang), Northern Thai ᨴᩤ᩠ᨦ, Khün ᨴᩤ᩠ᨦ, Lao ທາງ (thāng), Tai Dam ꪕꪱꪉ, Shan တၢင်း (táang), Tai Nüa ᥖᥣᥒᥰ (täang), Ahom 𑜄𑜂𑜫 (taṅ).
