Etymology[edit]

From Old Georgian ჴორჴი (qorqi, larynx; throat), from Proto-Georgian-Zan *qorq- (throat, pharynx; jaws). Cognate with Mingrelian ხურხი (xurxi) and Laz ხურხი (xurxi). Klimov compares the form to Proto-Kartvelian *qarqa- (whence also Georgian ხახა (xaxa)).
