From Sanskrit ईश्वर (īśvara, chief; lord; master); probably via Old Khmer iśvara°, īśvara (chief, lord, master; an epithet of Śiva).

Cognate with Modern Khmer ឦស្វរៈ (ʼeisvâréaʼ), Lao ອີສວນ (ʼī sūan).
