Etymology

From Old Khmer សំតេច៑ (saṃtec), សំតច៑ (saṃtac), សំតាច៑ (saṃtāc), សម្តាច្ច៑ (samtacc, “condition of being supreme in status and power”). Cognate with Modern Khmer សម្ដេច (sɑmdac).

Usage notes

• The present term may be combined with พระบาท(prá-bàat) (literally "divine feet") as พระบาทสมเด็จ(prá-bàat sǒm-dèt) when used as an honorific for a monarch who has been crowned formally. As for a monarch that has not or not yet been crowned formally, he is only entitled to สมเด็จ(sǒm-dèt).
