Inherited from Sanskrit দীৰ্ঘ (dīrgha) + Middle Indo-Aryan -𑀮- (-la-), Inherited from Proto-Indo-Aryan *dr̥Hgʰás, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *dr̥Hgʰás, from Proto-Indo-European *dl̥h₁gʰós (long). Cognate with Old Persian 𐎭𐎼𐎥 (darga), Avestan 𐬛𐬀𐬭𐬆𐬔𐬀 (darəga, long), Latin longus, Old Church Slavonic дльгъ (dlĭgŭ).
