Inherited from Prakrit 𑀠𑀓𑁆𑀓𑀇 (ḍhakkaï, to cover), denomimalized from *𑀠𑀓𑁆𑀓𑁆 (*ḍhakk, cover), from a substrate. Cognate with Assamese ঢকা (dhoka), Hindi ढकना (ḍhaknā), and Punjabi ਢੱਕਣਾ (ḍhakkaṇā). Doublet of ঢাক (ḍhak) and ঢাকনা (ḍhakona).

The word is generally thought to originate from ঢাক (ḍhak), which has several meanings in Bengali. It either refers to the Butea monosperma, a tree commonly found in the area, or pays homage to the local dhak instrument played by the order of Governor Islam Khan I during the inauguration of the city in 1610.[1]
