Etymology[edit]
First attested in c. 1503 as Middle Hindi ہاتھ (hāth) / ہات (hāt) / ہَتھ (hath) / ہَت (hat), inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀳𑀢𑁆𑀣 (hattha), from Sanskrit हस्त (hasta), from Proto-Indo-Iranian, from Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰés-to- (“hand”), from *ǵʰes-. Doublet of دَسْت (dast).
