From Middle Persian swk' (sōg, “burn, burning”), ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *ḱewk-.
Related to سوختن (suxtan, “to burn”), سرخ (sorx, “red”), and سوگند (sowgand, “oath”); and also to Old Armenian սուգ (sug, “grief”).
