South Levantine Arabic[edit]
Etymology[edit]
Uncertain. Possibly from Aramaic [Term?]; cfr. Western Neo-Aramaic ܙܰܠܡܬ݂ܰܐ / زَلمثَا (zaləmṯā), with the same meaning. Alternatively from Arabic زَلَمَة (zalama, “[figure of the] human body”), from زَلَمَ (zalama, “to cut off”).
