Borrowed from Aramaic אוּמָּנָא (ʾūmmānā, “artist, artisan, craftsman”) (Classical Syriac ܐܽܘܡܳܢܳܐ), from Akkadian 𒌝𒈪𒀀 (UM.MI.A /⁠ʾummānu⁠/, “expert, artisan, artist, craftsman, foreman”).
