Etymology

From Proto-Indo-European *h₂eyd- (to swell) +‎ -ն- (-n-); cognate with Ancient Greek οἰδέω (oidéō, to swell), Old Church Slavonic ѩдра (jędra, bosom), Old High German eiz (swelling) (German dialect Eiß (purulent ulcer)) and perhaps Latin aemidus (swollen).[1][2] Related to այտ (ayt).
