From *qačan "when, at what time", from Proto-Turkic *ka- (interrogative particle).

Cognate with Old Turkic [script needed] (qačan, when), Kazakh қашан (qaşan), Kyrgyz качан (kacan), Uzbek qachon, Uyghur قاچان (qachan), Shor қачан, Yakut хаһан (qahan, when), etc.
