Borrowed from Classical Persian وَزٖیر (wazīr), from Arabic وَزِيرٌ m (wazīrun, helper, aide, minister, indefinite nominative singular, literally one who bears (the burden of office)).

Compare also Kyrgyz вазир (vazir), Bashkir вәзир (vəzir), Tatar вәзир (wäzir), Crimean Tatar vezir; Uzbek vazir, Uyghur ۋەزىر (wezir), Turkish vezir, etc.
