Borrowed from Old Church Slavonic оупъвати (upŭvati), either via Old Ruthenian упова́ти, вповати (upováti, vpovati) and Old East Slavic оупъвати (upŭvati) or borrowed later from Church Slavonic, ultimately from Proto-Slavic *upъvati.
