Borrowed from Classical Mongolian ᠤᠯᠤᠰ᠋ (ulus), from Middle Mongol ᠤᠯᠤᠰ᠋ (ʾwɽwz /ulus/), from Common Turkic *uluš (“country, city”). Doublet of native улад (ulad, “people”) and Russian borrowing улус (ulus, “type of village”).
