Etymology[edit]
Inherited from Proto-Mongolic *nokaï, probably related to Xianbei 若干 (*ñaqañ) with further Para-Mongolic cognates.
Compare Kalmyk ноха (noxa), Dongxiang nogvei, Daur nogw, Para-Mongolic Khitan 𘰕𘯛 (*ń qo), 捏褐 (niehe), Tungusic Evenki некэ̄ (ņekə̄, “sable”), Jurchen nieha (“puppy, small dog”), Manchu ᠨᡳᠣᡥᡝ (niohe, “wolf”) and maybe Korean 너구리 (neoguri, “raccoon dog”).
