From Proto-Slavic *kǫsъ. Cognate with Russian кус (kus) and кусо́к (kusók), Slovene kos, Serbo-Croatian кус, kus, Slovak kus. Non-Slavic cognates include Sanskrit खादति (khādati, he chews), Persian خاییدن (xâyidan, to chew).
