From Proto-Turkic *kēŋ (wide, broad). Cognate with Kazakh кең (keñ), Kyrgyz кең (keŋ), Crimean Tatar keñ, Kumyk генг (geñ), Uzbek keng, Uyghur keng, Shor кең, Western Yugur ken, etc.
