From доби́я (dobíja, to extract, to acquire) +‎ -тък (-tǎk), from an earlier Proto-Slavic *dobytъkъ. Cognate with Belarusian дабы́так (dabýtak), Macedonian добиток (dobitok), Polish dobytek, Serbo-Croatian доби́так, Ukrainian добу́ток (dobútok).
