From Old East Slavic Олександръ (Oleksandrŭ), from Ancient Greek Ἀλέξανδρος (Aléxandros), compounded from ἀλέξω (aléxō, I defend) +‎ ἀνδρός (andrós), genitive of ἀνήρ (anḗr, man): "defender of men". Cognate with English Alexander.
