Etymology

[edit]

From Ancient Greek Νικόλαος (Nikólaos).

Pronunciation

[edit]
  • IPA(key): [meˈkɔɫɐi̯]
  • Audio:(file)

Proper noun

[edit]

Мико́лай (Mykólajm pers (genitive Мико́лая, nominative plural Мико́лаї, genitive plural Мико́лаїв)

  1. a male given name, Mykolai, equivalent to English Nicholas

Usage notes

[edit]
  • The form Мико́ла remains in active use today, while the form Микола́й is of largely historical use (e.g. Святи́й Микола́й (St. Nicholas)). However, Микола́й is used as the base for patronymics and other derived terms: hence, the patronymic of Мико́ла is Микола́йович instead of the expected Мико́лович.
