Learned borrowing from French hypertrophie,^[1] a French-coined term adopted into Greek, equivalent to υπερ- (yper-, “over, hyper-”) +‎ τροφ(ή) (trof(í), “food, nourishment”) +‎ -ία (-ía). First attested 1856.^[2]
