From Proto-Hellenic *putʰmḗn, from Proto-Indo-European *bʰudʰmḗn.

Cognate with πύνδαξ (púndax), Sanskrit बुध्न (budhná), Latin fundus, Old Armenian անդունդ (andund), Old English botm (English bottom).
