From κυνηγέτης (kunēgétēs, hunter) +‎ -ῐκός (-ikós, suffix meaning ‘of or pertaining to’ forming adjectives). Κυνηγέτης (Kunēgétēs) is derived from κύων (kúōn, dog) (from Proto-Indo-European *ḱwṓ (dog)) + ἡγέτης (hēgétēs, leader) (ultimately from ἡγέομαι (hēgéomai, to lead)).
