From Pontic Greek ακρίτας (akrítas), from Byzantine Greek ἀκρίτας, a form of ἀκρίτης (akrítēs) as in the Trapezund manuscript of the Digenes Acrites epic of 12th century. Also see ακρίτης (akrítis).
