Maltese

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

From għar (cave) +‎ għul (ogre). Modern irregular pronunciation possibly due to other old name of Casal Gregorio, Girgor or in this case Gargur in Maltese. The generally-considered-folk etymology of ‘the English mixing up the pronunciation of the name’ might have also taken effect.

Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): /ħa.l‿ɡar.ɡur/
    • IPA(key): /ħa.l‿aˤːˈrəˤwr/ (archaic)
    • IPA(key): /ħal ɣarˈɣuːr/ (archaic, rural)

Proper noun

[edit]

Ħal Għargħur m

  1. Għargħur (a village and local council of the Eastern Region, Malta)
