From Proto-Germanic *þarzijaną (to cause to dry), from Proto-Indo-European *torséyeti, from the root *ters- (dry). The Proto-Germanic *þarzijaną would originally have been a causative of the class 3 strong verb *þersaną, of which there is no known descendant in Old Norse.
