Etymology

From Middle High German echzen, achzen, echezen, achezen (to say, groan, lament), from Old High German *ahhizen, *ahhizzen (to say ‘ah’), attested in the verbal noun ahhizōt, derived from the interjection ah (oh; ah; my; alas), whence modern ach (idem).
