Debated origin.
- Either inherited from Old Swedish øland (“island”), then cognate with English island.[1]
- Or compound of ø (“island”) + land (“land; province”), in the sense "the land of the island". Compare with Södermanland.[1]
Earliest known form attested since 1283 as Medieval Latin Ølandia.[1]
