From Middle High German zītlīch, from Old High German zītlīhho, equivalent to Zeit + -lich. Compare English tidely.

- The German word does not mean “temporary, momentary”. For that use vorübergehend, kurzzeitig, etc.
- "Das Zeitliche segnen" is a euphemism for dying, e.g. "Er hat das Zeitliche gesegnet"
