From Old Danish wogge, from Old Norse vagga (accusative, dative, genitive vǫggu), cognate with Swedish vagga. Derived form the verb vaga (see the following word).

From Old Norse vaga, from Proto-Germanic *wagōną (“to move, stir”), cognate with Swedish vagga, English waw (obsolete), wag, German wagen (“to dare”), Dutch wagen (“to dare; to move”). Doublet of vove. The modern Danish form has been influenced by the previous noun.
