From the root of sarkt'(i) (to blush, to become red) +‎ -ons, from Proto-Indo-European *sor- (red, reddish-brown). Cognates include sarkans (red, pink), Lithuanian dialectal sárkanas (bright, clear, light; pink), Proto-Scythian *suxrí (bright), Persian سرخ (sorx, red), Northern Kurdish sor (red),[1] Sanskrit शुक्र (śukra, bright, resplendent), Ossetian сырх (syrx, red).
