Etymology

Borrowed from Ottoman Turkish سودا (sevda) (compare Turkish sevda (love)), from Arabic سَوْدَاء (sawdāʔ, black [bile]), translation of the Greek μέλαινα χολή (mélaina kholḗ) from which the term melancholy is derived.

Akin to sevdàlīnka, sevdàlija, sevdàluk, sèvdi, sèvdisati.
