From Proto-Vietic *c-ruː (deep), from Proto-Mon-Khmer *ɟruuʔ ~ *ɟruh ~ *rɟuh (deep). Cognate with Nghệ An/Hà Tĩnh dialects su, Muong khu, Khmer ជ្រៅ (crɨw), Bahnar jrŭ, Pacoh tru, Khmu [Cuang] ɟruʔ.
