Etymology[edit]

Unknown. Possibly from a Vulgar Latin root *rhizomāre, from Ancient Greek ῥίζα (rhíza, root, base, foundation) (compare Greek ρίζωμα (rízōma, rhizome)), or alternatively, through metathesis, from a Vulgar Latin root *remediāre, from Latin remedium. Compare Aromanian aradzim, arãdzimari.
