From Middle Welsh pwll, from Proto-Brythonic *pull, from Old English pull, pyll (“tidal pool”) or Old Norse pollr (whence Icelandic pollur), from Proto-Germanic *pullaz (“pool”). Cognate with Breton poull and Cornish, Irish, and Scottish Gaelic poll.
