Etymology[edit]
Borrowed from Hungarian puttony. Doublet of butt (“cask”).

- A wooden or wickerwork basket used, in Hungary, to carry grapes in a vineyard
- A measure of such an amount of dried grapes added to the ferment in making tokay wine and hence a measure of its sweetness

From German, more specifically from Bavarian–Austrian German; compare German Bütte (“tub, vat, barrel”) and English butt (“cask”).[1][2]
