From Proto-Iranian *pr̥štáh (“back”), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *pr̥štʰám (“back”), from Proto-Indo-European *pr̥-sth₂-ós. Cognate with Avestan 𐬞𐬀𐬭𐬱𐬙𐬀 (paršta), Persian پشت (pošt), Baluchi پت (put), Sogdian 𐫛𐫡𐫝𐫏 (prcy).
