Etymology

[edit]

From Proto-Slavic *mȍžžene. The word has undergone irregular change e → a, probably by analogy in *moždanъ.[→Snoj, 2015] This caused gradual hardening of the consonant cluster to (žž → ždž → žg). The non-fully hardened form (možjȃni) is obsolete or dialectal (Šavrin Hills dialect). In southeastern part of South White Carniolan dialect, the palatization still fully exists (moždž́ani). Cognates include Serbo-Croatian mȍždāni, Serbo-Croatian mȍžđāni, Polabian müzdin and Polabian müzdene.
