From Proto-Philippine *ma-nakit, from Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *ma-ñakit, from *sakit. Analyzed as man- +‎ sakit. Cognate with Indonesian menyakiti (to cause pain to someone), Sundanese ᮙᮑᮊᮤᮒ᮪ (manyakit, sickness; complaint; disease).
