From Middle Dutch lancmoedich, equivalent to lang + moed + -ig, calque of Latin longanimis. Compare Old High German lancmuotig (German langmütig), Middle Low German lankmodich, Gothic 𐌻𐌰𐌲𐌲𐌰𐌼𐍉𐌳𐌴𐌹 (laggamōdei, “longanimity”).
