Etymology[edit]
Learned borrowing from Cebuano tarong (“just; proper”) + ka- -an (abstract noun-forming circumfix). Coined by Eusebio T. Daluz in the early 20th century,[1] one of the founders of the Akademya ng Wikang Pilipino (Academy of the Filipino Language), one of the predecessors of the Komisyon sa Wikang Filipino (KWF) (Commission on the Filipino Language). Compare Pangasinan katonongan and Bikol Central katadongan.
