Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Balto-Slavic *káimas, from Proto-Indo-European *ḱóymos (village, home), whence also Latvian ciems, Proto-Germanic *haimaz (village), Gothic 𐌷𐌰𐌹𐌼𐍃 (haims, village), English home, ham (obsolete except in village names). Compare šeima, kiẽmas.[1]
