Inherited from Proto-Indo-Aryan *ȷ́ʰágẓʰati (laughs), from *ȷ́ʰagẓʰ-, reduplication of the root *ȷ́ʰas- (to laugh); compare Sanskrit जक्षत् (jákṣat, laughing) and हसति (hasati, laughs).
