Etymology[edit]
From Proto-Finnic *hanhi, borrowed from Proto-Balto-Slavic *źansís (compare Lithuanian žąsis).[1] Compare Erzya шенже (šenže, “duck”), which was probably borrowed from the same Balto-Slavic source.
