Etymology[edit]
According to Smoczynski, an adjectival derivative of gùsti (“to practice, get used to”), of unclear origin.[1] Cognate with Latvian gudrs.
Other theories linking the word to the root of gauti (“to acquire, get”), or to Hittite [script needed] (kutru(wa), “witness”), are subject to debate.[2]
