Etymology

[edit]

From a Vulgar Latin root *grylliolus, from Latin gryllus, from Ancient Greek γρύλλος (grúllos, performer in an Egyptian dance, comic figure, caricature). The Vulgar Latin form would have normally yielded Romanian *greior initially, followed by later changes; another more likely explanation starts with a root *grillus, leading to an early form *grer, with the duplication of the vowel between two -r-s.[1]
